Especially for the separation of mixtures with three or more components, the total energy requirement and the capital cost are very high. In spite of being an energy intensive process, distillation remains the most important separation method in the chemical process industry. Separation of a three component mixture in the individual components is made possible by the installation of a vertical wall in the middle of the column. Among distillation's process intensification technologies, this is one of the most promising, some study cases demonstrates how adding a dividing wall can improve the purity of a side-cut stream without requiring the addition of a second column.Ī Dividing Wall Column (DWC) is a distillation column which combines the operation of two conventional columns in one shell. This chapter provide an introductory overview about DWC applications, modeling and separation process engineering elements. Furthermore, the application of DWCs for azeotropic, extractive and reactive distillation is highlighted. This article reviews current industrial applications of DWCs and related research activities, including column configuration, design, modelling and control issues. In this respect, dividing wall columns (DWCs) represent a very promising technology allowing a significant energy requirement reduction.
